Lewis L. Fenton was a distinguished trial attorney, community leader, and one of the founding figures of the law firm that would become Fenton & Keller. In 1952, he and prominent trial attorney J. Hampton Hoge formed Hoge & Fenton in Monterey, establishing the foundation for a firm that has served the Monterey Bay region for more than seven decades.
Throughout his career, Mr. Fenton earned a reputation as an exceptional trial lawyer known for his courtroom presence, skill as an advocate, and commitment to professionalism, integrity, and civility. His influence extended beyond Monterey County, and his dedication to the highest standards of the legal profession earned him the respect of judges, attorneys, clients, and colleagues.
Mr. Fenton was also deeply committed to the Monterey Peninsula community. He was involved in the founding of York School, supported Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula during its move to its current location, and assisted Julie Packard with the founding of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He was also a longtime supporter of the Monterey Jazz Festival and numerous other local organizations.
In 1985, Mr. Fenton became the first recipient of the Monterey County Bar Association’s Gibson Award, recognizing distinguished community service and the highest standards of character and professionalism. Following his passing in 2005, the Monterey County Bar Association established the Lewis L. Fenton Excellence in Advocacy Award in his honor.
Mr. Fenton’s legacy remains an important part of Fenton & Keller. The professionalism, integrity, excellence in advocacy, and commitment to community service that defined his career continue to be reflected in the values and practice of the firm that bears his name.
